Peter Weiler

I am a Hungarian multimedia artist working primarily with digital tools. Coming from a family of architects my main focus is the human psyche in the built modern urban environment. With subtle humor I create flash snapshots of the contemporary challenges blending street philosophy and graffiti quirkiness.

My colorful works deal with political and emotional aspects of life in Hungary. Deep rooted melancholy for loss of time and changing cultural scenery that is apparent in design, architecture and the human interaction. I often blend art history and the contemporary art scene of Budapest and New York in my themes. Juxtaposing the banality of modern city life with the privileges and comfort of our society.

Growing up in the 1970-ies in communist Hungary, I lived in a totalitarian anti-democratic era till the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989. I find a strange parallel pattern to those dark times how in Hungary, Poland, UK and in the US political power is now often abused to silence and brainwash the individual. It is often banal how old communist tactics misfire as if social media didn’t exist and the government wanted to control all channels of media and our thought. Banal and tragic that history tries to repeat itself in such short cycles. Gaining freedom in 1989 in a relative short time forever changed that generation in Eastern Europe. Now gradually loosing that freedom is a central topics to me. I am redrawing the communist dictatorship’s haunting images in today’s contemporary society. I am blending historical figures and facts with my imagination.

Within the digital realm I am working with stylus hand-drawn images printed with giclée technology on canvas, paper and plexiglass. These cartoonish narrative scenes play with infinite space and color variations placing the human in the focus. Unknown people to well-known historical figures take central roles on my pictures.

I use photography as a foundation of my research and image building. In my studio personal or iconic historic photographs are recolored, redrawn and turned into super flat surfaces.

I seek interaction on the streets and frequently organize performances that reflect on social issues. At the time Hungary started to build the Southern border fence in the height of the migration crisis in 2015 I introduced my Personal border protection device to the country. It was a barbed wire one-man mobile cage I walked around in the railway station where the temporary refugee shelter was set-up. The performance has received international critical acclaim.

As a digital artist I take great pride that I created the first Hungarian art NFT (non-fungible token) that was the first Hungarian artwork to be sold for crypto currency. The price of 1Ether was paid, marking a digital historic moment in the Hungarian art world. I graduated from The Art Institute of Philadelphia in 1996 and after spending two years in the USA I moved back to Budapest, where I currently work. I have joined the MFA – Art practice program of School of Visual Arts in New York in 2019 where I graduated in 2021. I am currently researching how AI will change the visual arts and the creative flow of artists.
